Many people comment that Nellie’s appearance is somewhat different from that of the usual guide dog look. Those familiar with Lynley Dodd’s young children’s stories see a striking similarity with the “Hairy Maclary” character. Nellie is a poodle cross having been bred at Guide Dog Services from a Standard Poodle and a Labrador.
My work requires regular travel throughout New Zealand. Fortunately Nellie is a particularly high functioning guide dog who superbly navigates airports and easily locates countless new destinations.
Whereas my previous German Shepherd guide dogs were notorious for helping to manage the process, particularly for keeping lawyers in mediation on track, Nellie is all sweetness. When off duty she is especially friendly toward anyone who tolerates her constant nudges and nuzzlings.
